Furness House History
Designed by architect Edward Glidden and built in 1917, the Furness House is registered with the Maryland State and National Historic Societies and remains an example of the period architecture. Mr. Glidden was known for his period pieces that were socially appealing in cities such as New York and Paris.
The Furness House was named after Sir Christopher Furness who established one of the world’s largest shipping companies in 1891 and is still in existence today. Furness, Withy & Co., operated under several different locations including the Furness House which operated as one of his branch offices. Over time, many businesses operated out of the Furness House until it was renovated in Baltimore’s “Renaissance II”, a period in the 1990s where Baltimore revitalized the downtown area.
